Role overview
Job Title: AI Infrastructure Engineer
Location: Houston, Texas (Hybrid/On-site). Monday-Thursday Onsite, Fridays remote.
About The Company Our client is a newly established single-family office headquartered in Houston, Texas. The firm is focused on achieving “superior alpha generation” with a wide mandate, a long-term investment horizon, and a strategic emphasis on leveraging advanced analytics and AI to drive value across both public and private markets.
Job Summary We are hiring an AI Infrastructure Engineer to join our Investment Operations team in Houston, Texas. The ideal candidate will be an architectural thinker with strong technical execution skills, comfortable working from a blank slate to design and build a secure, auditable analytics platform. This is a ground-floor opportunity to architect the AI and data backbone of a multi-billion-dollar investment platform and family office. In this role, you will design and implement end-to-end data pipelines, develop the firm’s internal operating system (spanning data storage, compute, and user-facing application layers), integrate document AI ingestion processes, and establish a robust cloud infrastructure. These systems will power advanced analytics, simulations, and data-driven decision-making across the firm.
What we're looking for
-
Design and Build Data Pipelines:
-
Architect and implement robust data ingestion processes to centralize information from disparate sources (internal systems, third-party APIs, regulatory filings, etc.).
-
Ensure these pipelines transform raw data into structured, query-able formats suitable for analysis.
-
Develop Document AI Ingestion :
-
Integrate AI-driven document processing pipelines to ingest and parse unstructured documents (e.g. PDF reports, financial statements, due diligence questionnaires).
-
Leverage OCR and natural language processing techniques to extract key data and normalize it for inclusion in the central data repository.
-
Architect Platform (Portal, Vault, Engine):
-
Design the overall architecture of the firm’s internal operating system and seamlessly integrate its three core modules.
-
Oversee development of a modular employee-facing Portal (web front end for dashboards, alerts, and workflow tools), a governed Vault (secure data/document store with normalization and lineage tracking), and a scalable Engine (compute layer for data processing, analytics, and simulations), ensuring they function together as a cohesive platform.
-
Build Analytics & Simulation Engine:
-
Develop and maintain the high-performance compute environment that powers quantitative analytics and simulations.
-
Implement the Engine to run data processing jobs, portfolio risk models, and scenario simulations, enabling the investment team to derive insights and drive decision-making in real time.
-
Implement Secure Cloud Infrastructure:
-
Evaluate and deploy cloud infrastructure solutions optimized for our proprietary data and AI workloads.
-
Design a secure, scalable architecture with security-by-design principles – including role-based and record-level access controls, comprehensive data lineage, and audit logging – to ensure every data element is traceable to its source and all usage is compliant with governance policies.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field. (Master’s degree is a plus.)
- Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering, software engineering, or AI infrastructure roles, with demonstrated expertise building data/AI platforms and pipelines from scratch. Experience with private markets, financial services, or investment data is highly preferred.
-
Skills:
-
Strong proficiency in SQL and database design (SQL Server experience required)
-
Expert-level programming skills in Python (or similar languages) for data processing and automation
-
Experience designing and implementing ETL/ELT frameworks and complex data pipelines
-
Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and cloud-native data tools
-
Ability to work with and integrate unstructured data sources (JSON, APIs, PDFs, etc.), including use of OCR and NLP for text data
-
Familiarity with modern AI/ML technologies (e.g. large language models, document AI frameworks) and their infrastructure requirements
-
Strong architectural thinking with the ability to design scalable, maintainable systems
-
Experience with data modeling, data warehousing, and ensuring data quality/integrity
-
Certifications: Not required, but relevant cloud or data engineering certifications (e.g. AWS Certified Data Analytics, Azure Data Engineer Associate) are a plus.
- Experience building data or analytics systems for alternative investments, private equity, or family office environments
- Background working with financial data vendors and proprietary data sources
- Familiarity with quantitative finance or investment analytics workflows
- Experience leading technical initiatives or mentoring junior engineers
- Knowledge of data visualization tools and business intelligence platforms
- Track record of replacing legacy systems or third-party platforms with internal solutions
- Experience with real-time data processing and streaming architecture
- Exposure to MLOps or deploying machine learning models in a production environment (preferred)
Cultural Fit
- Thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with high autonomy and ambiguity. Takes initiative and demonstrates a bias toward action and rapid iteration when tackling challenges.
- Willingness to be on-site in our Houston office Monday through Thursday (8:30am – 5:30pm) to facilitate close collaboration and quick decision-making within the team.
- Ability to effectively leverage work-from-home Fridays for focused work while remaining responsive and aligned with team objectives.
- Committed to going the extra mile when needed, including occasional weekend availability for critical projects or firm-wide events.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, fitting a culture that values transparency, teamwork, and effective cross-functional engagement.
Benefits
- Competitive compensation with performance-based and long-term incentives.
- Health and Wellness: Comprehensive health insurance coverage, including medical, dental, and vision plans
- Work-Life Balance: Flexible hybrid work arrangements with a primary in-office presence in Houston and a generous PTO policy
- Professional Development: Opportunity to define and build technical infrastructure from the ground up; direct exposure to executive leadership and investment decision-making; and a potential growth path into technical leadership roles as the team expands
- Additional Perks : Ground-floor opportunity with a well-capitalized family office; work alongside future software engineers and quantitative researchers as the technology team grows; direct impact on multi-billion-dollar investment decisions; and a collaborative culture that values innovation and technical excellence
