Data Scientist AI Team Lead Skin Disease

Belle · Toulouse, O, FR · $49k - $60k

Actively hiring Posted 25 days ago

Role overview

Belle.ai is hiring an AI Team Lead to lead a small, high-impact team, building AI that can automatically detect and score disease severity according to international standards for conditions such as psoriasis, eczema (atopic dermatitis), and related dermatology indications. The team also owns Explainable AI (XAI)—designing explanations that are clinician-friendly and user-friendly. You’ll take what we already have and push it forward: improving model performance, reliability, and usability, while shipping production-ready solutions.

You’ll work in a young, energetic team with an international environment (France, Vietnam & US), and you’ll have opportunities to visit and work with teams at other branches, as well as attend top AI conferences, especially those focused on AI in healthcare.

Location: Toulouse, France

Compensation:

  • Base salary: €45,000 - €55,000 gross/year (depending on experience) + performance bonus up to 19% annual salary.
  • Equity: stock/options package (based on level and performance)
  • Sign-on bonus: available for strong candidates (case-by-case)

This team focuses on dermatology disease AI, including:

  • Severity scoring models aligned with international clinical scoring systems (e.g., PASI/ EASI/ VASI/ NAPSI, depending on indication and study requirements)
  • Core CV tasks: classification / detection / segmentation
  • XAI algorithms and experiences that doctors and users can trust (visual explanations, evidence maps, decision rationales, uncertainty, and quality checks)
  • Optional/adjacent: Generative AI and LLM-assisted workflows

You will continue developing and improving existing systems—not starting from scratch.

What we're looking for

  • Lead a small AI team: technical direction, planning, prioritization, mentoring, delivery ownership
  • Develop and implement ML algorithms for disease severity scoring and dermatology assessment
  • Data analysis and modelling with large datasets (data discovery, cleaning, labelling strategy, making data model-ready)
  • Statistical analysis & error estimation to prove models meet accuracy requirements (robust evaluation, bias/error breakdowns, reliability)
  • Learning from feedback: improve performance using feedback loops (clinician feedback, user feedback, error analysis, monitoring signals)
  • XAI ownership
  • Design and implement explainability approaches suitable for clinical workflows
  • Build explanations that are interpretable, faithful, and usable
  • Partner with product/clinical stakeholders to validate what is meaningful to doctors and users
  • Rapid prototyping to production: build prototypes to test performance (e.g., Streamlit demos), then deliver production-ready code (including APIs as needed)
  • Stay up to date with SOTA and competing technologies; evaluate and integrate what works
  • Collaboration & communication across an international team in France, Vietnam, and the US
  • Research & innovation: propose new methods and integrate them into existing systems
  • Documentation: write technical documentation and project reports (and papers if needed)
  • Work following standards: contribute to development aligned with quality/safety standards such as IEC 62304, IEC 60601-4-5, ISO 14971, ISO 13485 (as applicable)
  • 4+ years of professional experience in Machine Learning / Deep Learning (strongly preferred: Computer Vision in medical/derm domain)
  • Strong knowledge of CV algorithms (classification, detection, segmentation) and model evaluation best practices
  • Strong Python skills and hands-on experience with ML/DL libraries (e.g., NumPy, pandas, OpenCV, PyTorch/TensorFlow)
  • Experience delivering models into real products: training → evaluation → deployment → iteration
  • Solid understanding of clinical-grade evaluation: reliability, calibration, inter-rater variability awareness, robust metrics, error analysis
  • Demonstrated experience with Explainable AI (XAI) or strong motivation + portfolio/projects in explainability (e.g., attribution methods, concept-based explanations, uncertainty, counterfactuals, model debugging)
  • High integrity, positive attitude, strong ownership and responsibility
  • Passion & creativity: energetic, self-driven, loves experimenting and building
  • Strong problem-solving ability, collaborative team spirit
  • Ability to learn new concepts/tools quickly; can multitask and prioritize effectively
  • Professional English required (French is a plus)
  • Experience in dermatology or healthcare AI is a strong plus
  • PhD in a related field is a plus (optional)

Why Belle.ai

  • Young and passionate team, fast iteration, high ownership
  • International working environment (France, Vietnam & US)
  • Opportunities to collaborate across branches and travel for onsite work
  • Opportunities to attend major AI events, especially in healthcare/medical AI
