Senior Data Scientist

Princess Cruises · Miami, FL, US

Actively hiring Posted 1 day ago

Role overview

One of the best-known names in cruising, Princess is the world’s leading international premium cruise line and tour company, carrying millions of guests each year to hundreds of destinations around the globe. We give our guests the Medallion Class experience others simply can’t. The Love Boat promises something for everyone.

We are looking to hire a Sr. Data Scientist. Princess Cruises operates an advanced and extremely complex revenue management system (YODA) which was a finalist for the Edelman Awards in 2020. This system provides millions of daily recommendations which assist revenue managers in correctly pricing cruises and is used across seven brands within Carnival Corporation. YODA Data Scientists play a key role in the success of the system by ensuring that the system works effectively and continues to be the leading system within the cruise industry. This position resides in a Princess team but is part of a global data science community. With limited oversight, this role will apply their deep knowledge of the system and its complexities and their extensive experience in data science to develop improvements to YODA. This will be focused on improvements to the machine learning and artificial intelligence systems / algorithms (ML/AI) and their configuration. This role will support the process of having changes implemented by development teams into the production system, especially where the changes are difficult and complex and mostly interact with other data scientist.

Here’s a summary of what Princess is looking for in a Sr. Data Scientist. Is this you?

What you'll work on

  • REVENUE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (RMS) SUPPORT: Provide coaching and support to colleagues (including ones on other teams) who may require it. Provide training and support for other data scientists on global teams to prioritize and develop improvements to the RMS. Data science teams exist in Miami, Seattle, Italy, Germany, and the UK to support this development. Utilize extensive scientific and technical knowledge of YODA to provide a level of escalated support for users in cases that cannot be handled withing the brand data science teams. This is an escalated level of support where other resources have been unable to identify the source of the anomaly. Acquire a deep understanding of the business to be able to work out a compromise of the science recommendations and business constraints. In addition to applying your detailed technical knowledge, this involves understanding the business, listening to concerns of analysts, and influencing the final solution which can often be a compromise of the science recommendations and business constraints. This will be done in challenging cases where brand resources are unable to resolve issues. Apply your technical knowledge and experience to undertake difficult troubleshooting of science elements of YODA to determine the cause of anomalous results and identify areas for improvements. This is typically achieved by using SQL queries to examine the workings of the scientific modules in specific cases. Again, this is an escalated level of support where local brand resources have been unable to identify the source of the anomaly
  • RMS IMPROVEMENTS AND GLOBAL COLLABORATION: Working independently, gather requirements and discuss modelling results with data teams distributed globally. This will require some meetings outside of normal office hours, but within normal waking hours (0700 – 2100). With limited oversight, develop and prototype improvements to ML/AI elements of the RMS, with the goal of continuous improvement for revenue. Create innovative solutions for business problems within the RMS using state of the art data science methods and tools. Present developed prototype modules and models to the wider data science community. To undertake these functions, it is expected that travel to our international offices will be needed on a regular basis. This may involve travel up to ~25% of the time.
  • DRIVE IMRPROVEMENTS THROUGH DATA-DRIVEN PROJECTS: As a member of the Data Science team, collaborate with key senior staff across brands as directed on topics of interest to key stakeholders. Use insights garnered from analytical studies to influence decision making and promote data science within the data science community of the corporation. As required, collaborate with other teams to jointly develop plans for data science projects. Stay up to date with latest technologies and tools within the field of data science, revenue management and Artificial Intelligence. Actively engage in the wider AI community attending conferences and build a network of specialists in the area.

What we're looking for

  • A masters or other advanced degree in a quantitative discipline such as mathematics, physics, science, engineering, computer science etc. A bachelor’s degree may be appropriate with strong evidence of ongoing technical learning and work experience.
  • 5-7 years of experience working as a data scientist, some of this experience could be mitigated with an appropriate advanced degree. Experience in working with non-scientifically trained staff to achieve mutual goals. Experience working in teams to identify and solve problems and influence decision making. Ability to code at an advanced level in at least one computer programming language such as Python, R, SQL.

Travel: Less than 25% non-shipboard travel likely
