About this episode

Dr. Andrew Van Horn is a computational anthropologist whose research bridges evolutionary science, cultural evolution, and artificial intelligence. His recent work includes the 2026 Science Advances paper introducing PATCH, a deep-learning method for detecting heterogeneity of artistic practice in historical paintings, as well as studies on the compositional structure of traditional decorative artworks.

He has also published on cooperation and mutual aid in U.S. healthcare sharing ministries (Religion, Brain & Behavior, 2025), the psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic—including time dilation driven by fear and boredom—and a series of papers examining risk perception, social behavior, and resilience during the pandemic. His earlier research spans primate pelage evolution, human behavioral ecology, and quantitative analyses of health and body composition in Pacific Island populations.
